About Me

Why are you Vegan?
I get asked this all the time. The idea of eating animal products makes me physically ill. That’s why I am a vegan. I find eating animal flesh and bi-products very gross. I get this feeling primarily because of three reasons.

First, I think about the process of eating meat in great detail.  When I see a chicken (cooked or raw), I envision the process that it went through to arrive at its current state.  I think about it when it was alive, having its feathers plucked out, its feces and urine that it once expelled, its bones and blood, the diseases that the animals carry, etc.  I can’t imagine eating something that once had a colon ugh! I’m getting grossed out just writing about it. Second, I don’t distinguish between eating one animal from eating another animal.  I view eating a dog the same way as eating a pig or a cow.  Lastly, I believe it is healthier to be vegan.  Healthier for both my well being and the environment.

The smell of dead animals makes me physically sick. I became vegetarian at five years old when my Mom put my family on a vegetarian diet for one year. After one year she started cooking meat again, but I refused to eat it. Although my brother and sisters and parents ate meat again, I refused to do so and would say things like “that’s a cow, I don’t want to eat it”. I’m amazed that I made the compassionate connection at such an early age. At 20 years old, I went vegan mainly because I started to think about the process of dairy (i.e., where cow milk comes from) and that grossed me out. My logic was that, because eating animals was gross, then eating products that came from inside animals was also gross. It was an easy conversion to give up all animal products. At that time, however, I didn’t know any other vegans and there wasn’t as much support as there is today.
